If you created your podcast to grow your authority and your business I can relate… but can your listeners?

Relatability: The Key to Building Authority

You’re undoubtedly a smarty pants. An expert in your field, a thought leader, someone who knows their stuff inside out – that’s why you have a podcast about your niche. Your primary goal? To build your authority so you can increase your leads and sales.

But here’s a common mistake I often hear from podcasters: In their quest to showcase their deep knowledge, they end up alienating their audience. They talk over their listener’s heads, creating a disconnect instead of building trust. So, how do you fix this?

The Magic Phrase for Relatability

In this episode, I unveil a simple phrase that can make you way more relatable to your audience. The key is to make your ideas crystal clear and easy to understand. You’re the expert, and your knowledge goes deeper than your listeners’. Here’s the magic phrase: This might look like…

Variations of the Magic Phrase

  1. This might feel like…
  2. This might sound like…
  3. It might show up like…

Depending on the context, you can use these variations to create relatable content, even if you don’t have personal examples.

How to Create Magic with the Magic Phrase

After you have explained an idea or a process, your listener may be scratching their head. Or, they may be listening but not really paying attention. This is an idea floating in the ether that they can’t really wrap their heads around. This is why we need to make it relatable. We need for your listneer to be able to picture what this idea or process looks like, sounds like, or shows up like in the real world. So, you whip out the magic phrase and take your listener from concept to comprehension. Here’s how you can incorporate this into your podcast episodes. Lead with the one of the phrases and follow it up with:

  1. Analogies or specific examples to illustrate your points.
  2. Stories or case studies to make your ideas relatable.
  3. Moments from your own journey when you transitioned from not understanding to understanding.

If you want to hear with this sounds like, hit play on this episode – I sneak it in a few times!

It’s All About Engaging Their Minds, Not Just Their Ears

This approach engages your listeners’ imaginations. They aren’t just listening; they’re picturing themselves applying your ideas. it’s no longer a passive exercise. That extra bit of engagement makes your podcast becomes sticky. This is exactly what you want because now they might reference you when they are showing off their new knowledge. And, best of all, your name is top of mind when they’re in need of your services. This is what it’s like to be an authority in your space, and how you’ll reap the benefits of being the go-to person for your expertise. That’s the power of relatability.

Bonus: It’s Part of a Listener-Centric Approach

I talk a lot about listener-centric podcasting (seriously, like in episodes 95, 155, 138, 94, 83, and pretty much every episode in between.) I fixate on the listener-centric approach because it’s the best way to build a strong relationship with your audience. It positions you as the go-to authority in your niche. Remember, it’s not just about your information; it’s about the impact you have on your listeners.

Does Your Podcast Need a Relatability Rehab?

If you’re a coach, business owner, or service provider, the value of your content lies in the impact you have on others. A listener-centric approach to podcasting is one of the best ways to amplify your impact, improve your podcast ROI, generate leads, and convert with ease. This is where I come in. This is what I do.

So, what does it look like to work together? It might look like a use reviewing and improving your show through the Podcast Tune-Up or it might look like a full rebuild (or custom build if you’re not yet podcasting) with our Concept to Casting program. Either option includes personal, one on one coaching and a clear path to a better podcast (that is relatable and serves you business).
