Does Your Podcast have the One Thing that All Good Podcasts Have?
Everyone wants to know, ‘what makes a podcast good?’ Ask 10 podcast listeners and you’ll get 10 different answers. The truth is, there’s one critical thing that every good podcast has. In this episode of Just the tip, I reveal what that is and how it can make your podcast good (even great).
I see this question about podcasts all the time, especially on social media. The answers range from good sound quality, the performance of the host, to the content and even the music.
All of those things are elements of a good podcast, but when you think about it, each one of these things is subjective. What’s not subjective, is the intention.
Is the podcaster delivering on their promise to their listener? Is the intention of the podcast being delivered consistently, every episode?
If you’ve listened to my show AT ALL, you know that I’m all about being listener-centric so it should come as no surprise when I tell you that the answer to the question of ‘what makes a podcast good?’ has only one answer. That’s up to the intended audience.
Let’s look at it from a different medium. Are smultzy made-for-TV holiday movies good? If you ask someone who wants to spend every waking hour playing Mindcraft, the answer is going to be a ‘hell-no!’ But, if you ask someone who’s snuggled under their favorite blanket and already clutching their box of tissues, well the answer between the sobs is a mushy yes.
Apply this to podcasting. Apply this to your podcast.
Here are a few questions that will help you determine whether your podcast is good.
What experience do you intend to deliver to your audience? And, are you delivering?
Is the podcast serving your listener in the intended way?
Is your podcast respectful of the listener’s time?
Are you ever lazy about planning or putting together your podcast?
Can people comfortably listen to your podcast or is it an assault to their earballs?
Are you putting your listener first (and yes, I do mean ahead of your ego)?
It’s all about delivering on the intention of your podcast and serving your listener!
This is true whether you’re like most of my clients and have a podcast that is a marketing tool for your business, you’re building your personal brand, authority or visibility, or even if you’re just podcasting for the fun of it. You’re intention is likely to inform, educate, inspire, or entertain – if you’re not delivering on that intention, your podcast is not good.
The good news is, you can make your podcast good. Now you know the secret so go figure out what the intention is, do what you say you’re going to do, and treat your listeners like gold.
