Want a podcast that gets action? Then never skip the call to action!

It may seem like an obvious statement but I hear so many podcasters skip or butcher the call to action in their podcast.

I’ve shared the importance of the Call to Action before. So, if you want to become a master at effective CTAs, make sure you check out episodes #102 and #39 by clicking on 102 and 39.

Uh-oh, did you see what I did there… I snuck in a quick call to action, right there. It’s so metta!

In this episode, I give you the tools you need to make your calls to action more effective. There are three key things that every call to action has to include and these are — Why, What, and How.

Let me break these down for you.

  1. Why. I’m starting with this one because I hear way too many podcasters skip this part of the CTA. If you want people to take action, you need to tell them why. What’s in it for them? Not, what’s in it for you but what’s in it for them. Why should they take action, how will it help them? If they don’t fully understand the benefit to them, they are way less likely to take action.

  2. What. Now that your listener knows why they want to take action, you need to tell them what to do. Never, ever, ever, assume they know what taking that action looks like. This is the literal action you are calling them to take. It might be visit, subscribe, download, or even ‘check those out’ which you may recognize by my stealthily dropped sample call to action earlier.

  3. How. Okay, they know why they should take action, they even know what action to take and now it comes down to the ‘leave no listener behind’ part of your call to action by telling them ‘how to take that action’. No, this is not the same as the ‘what to do’ part of your call to action. Click is not the same as ‘click on the orange button on the home page of my website’. You need to go out of your way to make sure they know exactly what to do because when you’re super clear, they are more likely to take the action the way you want them to take the action and they are going to feel more taken care of along the way. Who wouldn’t want that?

I bet you’ve never thought so much about your call to action! Good. My job here is done.

Well, almost. There is one more thing. One more misconception I want to clear up while we’re talking about CTAs. Your call to action is not always about sales. It might be, but it’s not always. You want to have your CTA match the information provided in the podcast. Give it context and it will perform so much better! And, it will make the ‘why’ part of your podcast so much more natural.

When you listen to this episode, pay attention to how I get into my calls to action – you’ll find that they are related to what I’m already talking about. They have context and that means that they fit seamlessly into what I’m saying. The truth is, they are logical next steps for you – which is why they don’t feel pushy or awkward!

Drop your CTAs into your show where they make sense, tell your listener why they should take action, what that action is, and how to take that action AND I guarantee you will be getting a lot more action!

Speaking of getting action, a recent client told me they hired me because I was the only podcast coach they spoke to who gave them actionable advice during a free call. What can I say, I’m a fan of action.
