The Best Podcast Microphones: My Top 3 Picks for Every Budget

When it comes to podcasting, your microphone can make or break your audio quality. It’s the one piece of equipment standing between you and a clear, professional sound. But with so many options out there, how do you pick the right one?

Spoiler alert: It’s not just about price—it’s also about choosing the mic that works best for your recording environment, your voice, and your podcasting goals.

In this episode, I walk you through:

  1. Why the right microphone matters.
  2. The pros and cons of two popular (but often misunderstood) microphones.
  3. My top 3 microphone recommendations (one for every budget).

Why Your Mic Matters

Your podcast microphone is the gateway to your listener’s ears. A good mic delivers clean, clear audio that makes you sound professional and engaging. A bad mic—or even good mic technique gone wrong—can leave you sounding distant, hollow, or just plain bad.

I hate to break it to you but listeners will judge you based on the quality of your mic. Okay, I’ll judge you — I can’t stand to hear bad audio when I’m listening to a podcast and I’m not alone.

If your audio sounds mediocre, listeners assume your podcast is too. They’ll think sub-par quality, sub-par content. And once that thought crosses their mind, they’re off to the next podcast.

Investing in the right microphone isn’t just about audio quality—it’s about building authority and making sure your listeners stick around.

Two Popular Podcast Mics (That You Should Skip): The Blue Yeti and the Shure SM7B

Let’s address two microphones you’ve probably heard about:

1. The Blue Yeti

While the Blue Yeti has gained popularity, it’s not the best choice for most podcasters. I repeat. The Blue Yeti is NOT the best choice for podcasters. Why? It’s a condenser mic, which means it picks up everything—background noise, room echo, and even that distant dog barking. Unless you’re in a professional studio, this mic will work against you.

If you’re dead set on using a Blue Yeti, make sure your recording space is acoustically treated. Otherwise, skip it and grab one of the mics I recommend below.

2. The Shure SM7B (aka the “Joe Rogan Mic”)

This dynamic microphone is a powerhouse and a favorite in the podcasting world. But before you hit “buy,” know this: the SM7B is best for podcasters with a professional setup and some tech experience. It requires an XLR connection and an audio interface, which means you’ll need to spend at least an extra $200 on top of its $400 price tag. (Don’t get me wrong. This is a fantastic mic – but do you need it?)

My Top 3 Podcast Microphone Recommendations

I’m happy that you’re reading this but if you want to hear how each of these sounds, click play because I demo each one in this episode.

Here are my no-brainer mic picks for podcasters at every budget:

1. Budget-Friendly: Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB ($80)

This mic is a dream for beginners and veterans alike. It’s versatile (USB and XLR connections), easy to set up, and delivers great sound. Even when you’re recording in a less-than-perfect space the ATR2100 has you covered.

2. Mid-Range: Shure MV7 ($249)

If you’re ready to upgrade, the Shure MV7 offers decent noise cancellation, USB/XLR connections, and  enhancement software. It’s perfect for podcasters looking to step up their game without going full pro.

3. Pro-Level: Electro-Voice RE320 ($350)

For those who want top-tier audio, the RE320 is my go-to. It’s rich, full, and built like a tank. You’ll need an audio interface and some cables to use this mic, but the investment is worth it if you’re serious about podcasting.

Pro Tips for Better Audio

Your mic is important, but it’s not the whole story. Here are two tips to maximize your sound quality:

  1. Optimize Your Recording SpaceThink soft: carpets, couches, and curtains all help absorb sound and reduce echo. For more on this, check out Episode 169 of Just One Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach.
  2. Master Mic TechniqueThe best mic in the world won’t save you if you’re using it wrong. Stay close to the mic, speak clearly, and avoid unnecessary movements. For more on this, check out episode 157 and episode 001.

Take Your Podcast Mic Seriously

Your podcast microphone is more than just equipment—it’s your podcast’s first impression. Choosing the right mic and using it well can elevate your audio quality and your authority.
