How do you boost your podcast confidence?
To become more confident as a podcast host, shift your focus away from yourself and toward serving one specific listener. Confidence doesn’t come from becoming a perfect ‘radio’ version of a podcaster. It comes from remembering you’re solving a problem for someone who needs your help.
As a podcast coach, I see a lack of podcast confidence stop shows before they even start. Not equipment. Would-be-podcast hosts are surprised by this because they assume that the tech or the strategy is the hardest part… until it comes time to get on the mic. Then, suddenly, they freeze. Or, they go back to buying more gear or perfecting the strategy… just until they’re sure. Yep, good old perfectionism as procrastination hiding the real boogeyman…
Confidence.
Let’s unpack why that happens and how to fix it.
Why New Podcasters Struggle With Confidence
Most business owners have never:
- Hosted a show
- Spoken into a microphone outside of a Zoom call or webinar
- Interviewed someone formally
- Presented ideas publicly
So what do they do to bridge this knowledge and experience gap?
They look at the biggest podcasters they can find.
And suddenly they think they need:
- A broadcaster’s voice
- High-profile guests
- Studio-quality polish
- Thousands of followers waiting to become loyal podcast listeners
They compare themselves to the most successful and experienced, and then beat themselves up for every “um,” “ah,” and stumble.
This is what kills their momentum: ridiculous expectations, perfectionism, and a deep fear of judgment.
The Confidence Shift Most Podcasters Need
When we work with podcasters struggling with their confidence, the first thing we do is remind them that they are not performing for a large audience; they are talking to one person.
Seriously – I want this to really sink in.
You are not doing a podcast to be the best damn host ever or show off how brilliant you are; you’re doing it out of service.
Got that?
It’s all about serving the listener.
One listener.
That one person who had a problem then found your podcast and thought you might be able to help them. That one person put you directly into their earholes and pressed play.
Serve them.
This shift is the key to boosting podcast confidence, so let me say it again…
Your listener didn’t press play to critique your delivery. They pressed play because something isn’t working for them.
They’re stuck.
They’re frustrated.
They’re looking for clarity.
They are the vulnerable one in that moment.
Not you.
They are actively looking for someone who knows more than they do about this specific issue.
And that’s you.
You already run a business.
You already have clients.
You already have proof that what you know works.
Even if you only know a little bit more than your listener, that still puts you in a position to help.
Put this pep talk on a loop until it’s drilled into your brain, and you stop getting in your own way!
A Practical Exercise to Boost Podcast Confidence Instantly
Here’s something I have my clients do.
Instead of imagining a massive audience, imagine one person you’ve already helped.
Picture them:
- Sitting across from you in your office
- At a coffee shop
- On a Zoom call
- Raising their hand and saying, “I’m struggling with this.”
You’ve had this conversation before.
You know where they’re stuck.
You know the common mistakes.
You have stories that will help them feel less alone.
You know the path forward.
Now talk to that one person.
Calmly. Clearly. The way you would in real life.
That’s podcasting with confidence.
How to Handle Imposter Syndrome Before You Hit Record
If imposter syndrome creeps in, here’s another practical tip. Keep a ‘kudos collection’.
This is something that Valerie (podcast coach and partner here) encourages our clients to do because it’s a simple way to transition from feeling like a fraud to remembering that you’re good at what you do and, (cue the Stuart Smalley music), doggone it, people like you! It’s an instant confidence boost.
Here’s how you create a Kudos Collection (it’s dead simple):
- Open a folder, document, or Notes app (where you keep digital things)
- Create the collection by pasting:
- Every testimonial you’ve gotten
- Every thank-you email
- Every five-star review
- Every message or comment from someone who said your work helped them
When your confidence dips, go read it.
Not to inflate your ego, but to remind you that there is EVIDENCE of your capabilities. Proof that you know what you’re doing and that lives have been impacted.
Confidence grows from this undeniable evidence
Confidence Isn’t About Being Impressive
A lot of podcasters think confidence comes from sounding impressive.
It doesn’t.
It comes from remembering that your podcast is about sharing your expertise to inspire and help others. You’re walking a path you’ve already walked and turning around to guide someone else through it. That’s service.
And when you approach your microphone that way, the pressure drops and the joy goes way up.
Is a Lack of Confidence Holding You Back From Starting a Podcast?
If you’re stuck because you don’t feel ready, polished, or experienced enough, you’re not alone.
But waiting for confidence before you start rarely works.
- Clarity builds confidence (that’s why we create an aligned strategy for our clients before they even buy a mic).
- Repetition builds confidence. You have to get your reps in, and having a coach will help you get better every time.
- Serving builds confidence (which is why knowing who you’re podcasting for is so key for determining what your podcast should sound like).
If you want help bridging that gap between knowing your stuff and owning it behind the mic, that’s exactly what we work on inside our coaching programs.
Book a free private podcast coaching call, and we’ll look at what’s actually holding you back and how to move forward with confidence.
Because you deserve to be behind that mic.
And someone out there is waiting to hear exactly what you have to say.
