Reset Your Podcast
The reset. It’s a classic tool of the broadcasting trade. There’s no reason podcasters can’t use it too. It’s a simple way to grab hold of your show’s reigns and get things on track again. It’s a simple ‘you are here’ of your podcast. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to bring your listener back into the fold. I hate to burst your bubble but your listener does drift away and get distracted. Yes, even from your podcast, despite you being the sexiest, beastliest podcaster ever to grace iTunes.
So, what is the reset, exactly? Pretty much what it says it is. You use it to re-set the show. Not reboot. You aren’t starting over. You’re just making a little correction – kind of like re-aligning the tires. When your guest starts to grab the wheel and steer the show a little too much; reset. When the conversation takes a turn for the worse; reset. When you’re off on a tangent and you can almost hear your listener walking away; reset.
But these aren’t the only reason to use a reset. There are plenty of bonus benefits. And, these are what we call broadcaster secrets (that totally work for podcasters too – especially if you don’t like to edit too much). The reset also buys you time. Gives you the opportunity to look at your notes, think about your answer or get back to what you promised the listener they’d get out of the show. It’s the Swiss Army knife of podcast techniques!
So, now that you know how infinitely useful it is. Let’s talk about how to do it. Or, rather, let’s listen to me talk about how to do it. Ehem, play the podcast. Ah, now. Jeez. It’s only 5 minutes!
Now that you’ve listened, I hope that’s just the tip you need to make your podcast a little bit better the next time you hit record. I’d love to hear what you think. Connect with me on Facebook or hit me up for a free 15 minute brain picking session. Ask me anything, judge me openly as a coach and see what I’m made off. But consider yourself warned, I am the sexiest, beastliest podcast performance coach ever to grace the internet…
